Science Sunday: A Space Lapbook

Throughout our Space Study this past year,
the kiddos each created a lapbook,
full of info about our Solar System.

I wanted to take y'all through their lapbooks,
in case you want your kiddos
to do one someday...

**************************************

This is Jungle Girl's cover
(Panel 1)
for her three folder lapbook.

******************************************

Here are Panels 2 and 3...
Panel 2 contains...
Panel 3 includes...
...planet atmosphere booklets...
...and the
"How Many Moons Does Each Planet Have?"
booklet.

********************************************

Here are Panels 4 and 5.
Panel 4 includes a Moon Phase Dial
and scripture.
Panel 5 has...
...The Origins of the Planet Names booklet...
... and a Rotation in Earth Time Dial.

*******************************************

Here is the lapbook
when it is completely open,
displaying Panels 6 and 7.
Panel 6 includes...
...a sun directional booklet...
..."Solid or Gas?" Planet Cards...
 ...a Planet Temperature booklet...
...a mnemonic device booklet
for remembering the planets names...
...a Revolution/Orbit in Earth Time booklet...
...and a "Distance From the Sun" fold-out.
Panel 7 focuses on the differences in a person's
Gravity/Weight on each planet.

******************************************

Panel 8
(on the back of the lapbook)
has...
...a Special Facts about the Planets
flap book.

*************************************

I was VERY PROUD of Jungle Girl...
...for completing this lapbook.

It was a lot of hard work on her part,
but she stuck it out,
and HOPEFULLY has learned a lot about
our Solar System by doing it.

**************************************

Now,
my younger kiddos also completed lapbooks,
but their books were smaller than their older sister's.
They had the Constellations Match Booklets
and Space Trading Cards.

But instead of all the other booklets...
...they colored, cut out, and ordered some
planet pictures.
They also had a Moon Phase Dial,
a sun directional booklet,
and memory verse in their lapbooks.
They also drew a picture of what they thought
and alien might look like...
...and made a planet pictures booklet.

for this Space Lapbook

Science Sunday: Once in a Lifetime...

Wednesday, June 6th,
was a once in a lifetime event
for the kiddos and I.

We went to...
the last remaining home of Tennessee's
Governor John Sevier.

It was hosting a viewing of the
...and the weather could not
have been more perfect!

We arrived at the homestead around 5pm,
and enjoyed walking the grounds and
watching local astronomers set up their
telescopes.

Around 5:30...
...the lead Astronomer led a simple talk
about the Transit of Venus-
its history, significance, etc.

He then showed us...
...what we would be looking for around 6:10pm.

While we waited for the Transit to occur...
...we had the opportunity to look at the sun
through the Telescopes
and were able to see some sun spots.

**********************************************

I have to give my kiddos credit here,
since the lines were long because there was a bit
of a crowd at the event.

They were pretty patient and polite,
and found creative ways to keep themselves entertained
until they had their turns at the Telescope.

********************************************

Finally, the big moment arrived...

I wish I had a fancy camera
to show you what we saw.

But I don't.

So here is an image I found
online that is similar to what we saw:
We saw the Transit at the angle,
since we looked through a telescope-
and the sun was green through the telescope lens.

*************************************

Now,
we also looked at the Transit with the use of our
handy-dandy Eclipse Shades...
...which the kiddos are wearing in this pic.

(Thank you, Almost Homeschoolers, for letting us know
about them- they are so cool!)

What we saw through our shades was something...
...like this.

I promise,
we WERE able to see the Transit with the shades,
but, again, my camera is not fancy enough
to take a good picture of it.

****************************************

Whenever some cosmic event like this occurs,
I am reminded of the following Bible verse
from the kiddos' Space lapbook:

"Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars."
 -Psalm 148:3

Yes-
let's praise the Creator of the Universe...

..for giving us such a wonderful day together
to enjoy his beautiful creation!

Play Dough, Pinterest, and the 3rd Planet from the Sun

Perhaps some of the most fun we have had
while "journeying through" our Solar System
was when we stopped off at Earth
and learned about her inner layers...

After seeing
(and seeing this idea again
I knew my kiddos were destined to make
a play dough layered Earth.
I was able to find several small packs of play dough
at Target's Dollar Spot
which I labeled...
...and put together a
"Layers of the Earth" Kit
for each of my kiddos.

(I should have included another container of yellow
for the mantle, since it is the thickest layer.
Later during the lesson I did give each of the kiddos
another one to make their models more accurate.)

********************************************

We began the lesson by reading and discussing...
...The Magic School Bus: Inside the Earth
by
Joanna Cole.

Then...
...I went over THESE
Layers of the Earth cards with the kiddos.
The kiddos then matched up the picture cards...
...with the labels as review.

*****************************************

Then it was time for the play dough!

Each of the kiddos...
...created their own earth models using the
"Layers of the Earth" Kits.
(Apparently, silly faces help in the
construction process...)

******************************************

Here are...
...their completed Earth models.
After the kiddos' finished their models...
...I cut 'em open with a pizza cutter...
...to reveal the Earth's layers.

********************************************
I highly recommend using play dough
when you teach your kiddos about the Earth.
It is such great fun!
