Math Monday: Wacky Wiffle Balls

Today's math post deals with shapes-
in particular,
circles (spheres) and rectangles.

This activity really put the kiddos'
fine motor skills to work, too...

(Oh, and let me preface this post by saying
I believe I saw a version of this activity
on someone else's blog,
but I do NOT remember where-
I'm so sorry!)
To make these
Wacky Wiffle Balls
you will need:

Wiffle balls
Craft foam, cut into 1"or so wide rectangles
Tweezers
Scissors

Take a foam rectangle and poke it through
on of the ball's holes.
Using tweezers, pull the the strip through
another hole opposite of the hole you started at.
(It should look a little something like this...)
Keep on pushing strips into the ball...
...until all the hols are filled.
You can leave you ball like this...
...or jazz it up a bit by cutting the ends into strips.
What a fun way to work on shapes!

Math Monday: Manipulatives Are All Around...

We LOVE using manipulatives during Math
in our house...

Manipulatives,
in OUR school,
can be about anything that you can
count, sort, group, compare, etc.

(I mean, we do use Math-U-See as our
main Math curriculum...)

*****************************************

This week,
Little Wild Man counted and sorted
buttons...
...since the shape of the week was a circle.
(Using a circular pill case was just an added bonus...)

*********************************************

Later in the week,
Little Wild Man counted and sorted with...
...some Pogs
(straight from the '90's, baby!)
The girls wanted in on the sorting fun too...

******************************************

Oh, and Baby Girl used...
...clothespins this week with
THIS addition game.
And, as it turns out,
not ONLY can clothespins be used as manipulatives...
...they can make
quite the fashion statement, too!

Math Monday: Xylophone Math

Alright, may I AGAIN kiss the toes of
Confessions of a Homeschooler?

I drew from her ABC's and 123's curriculum,
AGAIN, this week
while my younger kiddos were working
on the letter X...
Baby Girl and Little Wild Man
used her Xylophone number sheets
to practice writing their numbers.
(Since I do not have a laminating machine,
I put sheets like these in page protectors
and the kiddos can use dry erase markers
to practice writing again and again and again...)

****************************************
While baby Girl went to work on her Math-U-See...
...Little Wild Man used a Xylophone picture
to practice size order...
...and number identification...
(and he STILL had time to be his goof-ball self!)

Math Monday: Yarn Math

This week we were focusing on the letter "Y,"
so Confessions of a Homeschooler's Yarn Math activities
were a perfect fit for our lessons...

While Baby Girl continued to work through her
Math-U-See Primer,
I focused on sorting, graphing, ordinal numbers, and counting
with Little Wild Man...

The first math activity involved Little Wild Man
sorting some jewels by color...

He then used these jewels to fill in
a yarn graph...

Later in the week,
Little Wild Man put some yarn balls in number order...
Then he counted out pieces of string for each yarn ball...

Perhaps he'll be knitting with the yarn next...

But probably not....
