Sunday

Science Sunday: Once in a Lifetime...

Wednesday, June 6th,
was a once in a lifetime event
for the kiddos and I.

We went to...
the last remaining home of Tennessee's
Governor John Sevier.

It was hosting a viewing of the
...and the weather could not
have been more perfect!

We arrived at the homestead around 5pm,
and enjoyed walking the grounds and
watching local astronomers set up their
telescopes.

Around 5:30...
...the lead Astronomer led a simple talk
about the Transit of Venus-
its history, significance, etc.

He then showed us...
...what we would be looking for around 6:10pm.

While we waited for the Transit to occur...
...we had the opportunity to look at the sun
through the Telescopes
and were able to see some sun spots.

**********************************************

I have to give my kiddos credit here,
since the lines were long because there was a bit
of a crowd at the event.

They were pretty patient and polite,
and found creative ways to keep themselves entertained
until they had their turns at the Telescope.

********************************************

Finally, the big moment arrived...

I wish I had a fancy camera
to show you what we saw.

But I don't.

So here is an image I found
online that is similar to what we saw:
We saw the Transit at the angle,
since we looked through a telescope-
and the sun was green through the telescope lens.

*************************************

Now,
we also looked at the Transit with the use of our
handy-dandy Eclipse Shades...
...which the kiddos are wearing in this pic.

(Thank you, Almost Homeschoolers, for letting us know
about them- they are so cool!)

What we saw through our shades was something...
...like this.

I promise,
we WERE able to see the Transit with the shades,
but, again, my camera is not fancy enough
to take a good picture of it.

Whenever some cosmic event like this occurs,
I am reminded of the following Bible verse
from the kiddos' Space lapbook:

"Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars."
 -Psalm 148:3

Yes-
let's praise the Creator of the Universe...

..for giving us such a wonderful day together
to enjoy his beautiful creation!

Monday

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip (aka The BEST DAY EVER!)

This past Saturday,
Nana and Papa stopped by and took us all to...
...the Oakes Farm for some...
...fall FUN!

**************************************

The weather was PERFECT,
so I enjoyed taking in all...
...of God's glorious...
...eye candy...

...as well as all the colorful...
...man-made...
...treasures.

****************************************

We all also enjoyed...
...wondering through the "maize" maze...
 ...jumping around on the hay...
 ...climbing up...
 ...and down the dirt mound...
...checking out all the cute critters...

...and riding the wagon to go...
 ...and pick out...
 ...the...
 ...perfect...
 ...pumpkin!

Oh how I LOVE...
 ...family fun days like these...

Sunday

Science Sunday: Animal Encounters

We are faithful members of our local Zoo,
because each time we visit,
we encounter something new...

On the last day of Winter,
our family spent a
GORGEOUS afternoon
hanging out with the animals,
and may I just say,
they were expecting us...

Waiting for their close-ups...
...The shell dwellers...
...and the muddy fellers...
...The spotty sitters...
...and purple-tongued leaf-lickers...
...the pretty kitties...
...and the buck-toothed whinnies...
...The sleepy teddies...
...and the double-horned bed-buddies.

*************************************************

But MY favorite animal encounters-

BY FAR-

involved...
...this freckled-faced Zebra...
...top-toothless Giraffe...
...and curly-mopped Gorilla.

****************************************

Yes, I'd have to say,
the Zoo is a wonderful way to take
Science
and make it as fun as...
...a barrel full of monkeys!

Fun at the Museum

This past Wednesday,
I decided to take the kiddos to a local museum
at the University of Tennessee.

Before we left, I read...
Felix Travels Back in Time
by
Anette Langen and Constanza Droop.

It's a story about a little girl's bunny, named Felix,
who gets lost in time after taking
a field trip to a local museum.
During that time,
he sends letters back to the little girl,
describing where he is currently throughout time.
At the end of the book, there is a map detailing all of Felix's travels.

********************************************************

We also learned why you can
"hear the ocean" when you put
a shell up to your ear.

We ALL enjoyed putting this theory into practice...

***************************************************

After the Shell Exhibit, we went to look at the
Ancient Egypt Exhibit.

(Who's your Mummy?)

************************************************

After Ancient Egypt,
we headed further back in time to the
Prehistoric Era.

The critters back then were definately bigger
than our little bodies...

**************************************

We ended our time in the museum at the
Native American exhibit-
with a focus on our local Cherokee.
Little Wild Man wanted to get in this
tree trunk canoe,
but I had to inform him that this part of the exhibit
was NOT that "hands-on."
There WERE other "hands-on" activities
in this sections of the museum,
which the kiddos really enjoyed...

I am glad we ended our tour with the
Native Americans,
because next week the kiddos can use this as a
reference point when we start our
Native American study in history.

******************************************

This was a good field trip...
...can't you tell by their expressions?
