Chinese New Year Books and Videos

Chinese New Year
is going to be celebrated in 2013
on
Sunday, February 10th.

Every year in our homeschool lessons,
I have tried to introduce a new
holiday to the kiddos-
one that we do not normally celebrate-
to give them a better appreciation of
the world around us.

Over the years,
the kiddos have completed a
Columbus Day lapbook,
(similar to THIS one),
read and discussed
and
St. Patrick's Day with
THIS and THIS
Magic Tree House books.

Last year we studied
Chinese New Year
with the help of our local library.

I wanted to show y'all the resources
we used in case you want to study
this holiday more in depth also...

********************************

Holidays Around the World:

Celebrate Chinese New Year: With Fireworks, Dragons, and Lanterns

is full of colorful pictures...
...which truly bring
Chinese New Year alive...

*********************************

is chock full...
...of activities, stories, and...
...recipes,
all which enable you to experience
the holiday in a truly hands-on way.

Happy New Year! / Kung-Hsi Fa-Ts'ai!

This book contained colorful illustrations

which explained the customs and the religion behind
Chinese New Year.
We are a Christian household,
so this particular temple illustration
brought about a lot of good discussion...

****************************************

A DVD we watched that told all about
Chinese New Year was...

I thought FOR SURE this DVD would be
totally cheesy,
but am I glad I was wrong!

Perhaps the neatest part of the video
that kept the kiddos watching
was when they brought in a group
of traditional lion dancers-
WAY COOL.

*********************************

Beside non-fiction books,
we checked out a few fictional stories
that celebrated the holiday too...
is colorful and fun...
...with a somewhat poetic tone.

*******************************************

tells the story behind the animals
of the Chinese Zodiac...
...with unique illustrations.

****************************************

has a unique perspective on the holiday,
since the narrator has a Chinese and Korean heritage.
He also has friends who are not Chinese
(German-French and Hopi-Mexican)
that celebrate the holiday,
which offers an even broader perspective on the
modern view of Chinese New Year.

****************************************

is a fun, original folk tale,
reminiscent of Robin Hood,
in which a wok pot takes from a greedy, rich family
and gives to poor family.
The colorful and lively illustrations
add a great deal to the folktale...

******************************************

We also watched a DVD
that read aloud
several Asian heritage tales
called...

...Tikki Tikki Tembo...

and more stories to celebrate Asian Heritage.

The kiddos FAVORITE book on the DVD?

Tikki Tikki Tembo.

They LOVED the name of the first born son so much
that they often try to say it as
fast as their lips will let them:

"Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo!"

I used to do this as a child, too-
makes a Mama proud...

;0)

I hope you find these resources helpful
when celebrating
Chinese New Year!

Borrower Houses

A month or so ago,
Jungle Girl finished reading...
...The Borrowers
by
Mary Norton.

The movie,
is based on this book,
and my girls are both looking forward to
seeing it-
WHEN it comes to the Dollar Theater...

SOOOOO,
as a culminating project
for finishing the book,
and anticipating seeing the movie,
I let the girls create their own
Borrower Houses.

**************************************

After the girls each picked out a
shoebox in our
Recycling Stash,
I let them go "shopping"...
...in my garage craft stash.

(Later, the girls also pulled out some items
from their Lalaloopsy collection,
which really blended well,
since the dolls and their items
have a home fashioned appearance...)

Then,
their imaginations did
the rest of the work...

**************************************

Here is a tour...
...through Baby Girl's house...
 This is the upstairs
living area,
(aka The Lid of the Shoebox)
which includes:
...a Bottle Cap Dining Set...
 ...and a kitchen corner.

A giant paper snowflake rug ties
everything together... ;0)
 The bottom level
of the shoebox house
includes...
 ...Beaded Escape Ladders...
 ...Sticker Wallpaper...
...and a cozy bed,
with a comforter made out of
and olde pair of jeans.

**************************************

Now,
onto a tour...
...of Jungle Girl's home.
 We will begin with her
outdoor landscaping,
which includes...
 ...a spool swing seat...
 ...and a bridge entry way.

In her bottom level lies...
...Sponge Beds and a Balloon Beanbag
for the children...
...and another Sponge Bed for the parents,
complete with a Matchbox Dresser.

Upstairs is a great place for the
"Borrowers" to hang out...
 ...because there is plenty of
Popsicle Bench Seating...
...and a Bottle-cap Dining Room Set.

**********************************************

I am so impressed...
...by my girlies' creativity!

Now,
if I can just get them to clean up after
the "Borrowers" come and play
in their room...

Recommended Reads #1

Every week, I am going to try to list some of the books we are reading- at least the ones that have been a hit with us!

Jungle Girl has begun "Henry and Ribsy" by Beverly Cleary. I LOVED her books as a child, and I think she will too. I plan on using this book for her copy work and writing assignments (hmmm, perhaps we could even investigate dog training as a spin off from this book- Ribsy did have some pretty rude manners for a pup...)

Jungle Girl finished the final book in the American Girl book series about Kirsten. She had been reading these books as a part of her enrichment group through our Homeschool Group (Blount Home Education Association). I am sad to say that they are discontinuing this doll after this year, but hopefully they aren't discontinuing the books! They are very "Little House on the Prairie," another fav of mine as a girl!

In honor of Veterns Day this past week, we all read Lynne Cheney's "America: A Patriotic Primer." I love the illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser too. It was a great way to lead into our special prayer time for our veterans. (I am about to bust out into "America the Beautiful" just thinking about it...)

The last book I wanted to mention is "The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmie." What a classic! Any of Stan and Jan Berenstain's books are well worth the read. This book in particular went along well with preparing my kids for the upcoming holiday season and reminding them that will not get everything their little hearts desire.

I LOVE children's literature! My next Recommended Reads post will probably be full of some fall favs, and I would love to hear about your favorite fall books, so leave a comment!
