Bible Alive! Tuesday: Believe and Follow Feather Relay

In continuing with our church-wide...
 ...not a fan. study...

(You can see what we learned about  last week
by clicking HERE.)

...my K-1 Sunday School Class and I
discussed verses the meaning of the following two
Bible verses:
"For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life."
-John 3:16

"Then he said to them all:
'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves
and take up their cross daily
and follow me.' "
-Luke 9:23

*****************************************

In John 3:16.
Jesus is telling us that in order to be his disciple,
we must BELIEVE in him,
and in Luke 9:23,
he emphasizes the importance of
FOLLOWING him daily.

BELIEVING & FOLLOWING

They go together like PB & J...

**************************************

To illustrate this point to the kiddos,
we played a rather fun game,
which I have titled
"Believe and Follow Feather Relay."

(Creative, I know...)

To play the game,
the class was divided into two groups.

The objective of the game...
...was to race a feather on a plate
across the room to your teammate.

If the feather fell off at all,
you had to go back and start your walk over.
Please note that there is nothing keeping the feather
on the plate...
...which meant that the kiddos had to be...
...slow and steady to complete the task.

**************************************

After we did the relay like this once,
I brought out...
...some double-sided tape...
...and taped the feather onto the plate.

We ran the relay again.

And let me just say...
9NXkDe on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs
...the kiddos were MUCH speedier...
JXvuAl on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs
...the second time around!

************************************************

After the game was over,
the kiddos and I discussed how much easier it was
to complete the relay with the tape.

The same is true of our faith.

In order to truly be a disciple of Jesus,
we MUST so more than believe in him.

We must follow him.

Sure, we can continue about life
saying we believe in Jesus,
(completing the relay without the tape,
without any help)
but without a change in our behavior,
(addition of the the tape in the game)
how is it evident to others
we are following anyone but ourselves?

*********************************************

We continued this discussion of
"believing and following"
by examining the life of Matthew,
the tax collector.

In Matthew 9:9 it says:
"As Jesus went on from there,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth.
'Follow me,' he told him,
and Matthew got up and followed him."

And when Matthew made the decision
to follow Jesus,
he did just that.

He believed and followed his new Master,
leaving his old life behind...

  2. What a great and fun object lesson! It really got the point across!

I'm having trouble with linky tools this morning. I'll try again at naptime, but here is my link for our Joshua Toddler Lesson:
