One of the letters the kiddos and I have been working
this week is the letter Y,
so we have read a couple of stories with "Y" words...
Posy
by Linda Newbery
is about a curious little kitten
who, at one point, plays with
yarn....

and
Yokoby Rosemary Wells
is about another kitten...
So, with some inspiration from
KidsSoup,
we decided to make a couple of our own critters
out of yarn...

For this activity,
you will need:
Yarn
Empty toilet paper roll
Tape
Scissors
Ribbon
Googly eyes
Hot glue gun

Take your toilet paper roll
and flatten it.

Tape the end of the yarn to the
flattened tube.

Begin wrapping the yarn around the tube...

Keep on wrapping...

...and wrapping...

...and wrapping until your tube is nice a covered.

Slip a piece of ribbon through one side of the yarn roll...

....and tie it up tight!

Slip the yarn off the toilet paper roll.

Tie the ribbon into a bow,
and cut the loops apart to give your critter
that "shabby-chic" look.

If you want to make your critter into a puppet,
slip a piece of yarn through the ribbon
to create a "handle."

Finally, give your critter some personality
by hot gluing some googly eyes on its "face."

Now you are ready to play!
For more fun with books,
put down your knitting and
head on over to
stART...
Very cute! They look like Fry Guys :)

ReplyDeleteOh, I am so glad you said that- I thought so too!
These are so cute. I love the eyes.
ReplyDeleteThey remind me of tribbles.....
ReplyDeleteI remember making these as a kid. Love them!
ReplyDeleteI like your photographed step-by-step. Otherwise, I might have thought my kids wouldn't be able to make this, but now I see they could. Cute!
ReplyDelete@ Jenny:
ReplyDeleteI will admit, I had to do the tying and gluing, but the kiddos LOVED wrapping the yarn!
@ Ticia:
Tribbles! I haven't thought about those in a LONG time! Funniest Star Trek episode ever!
Oh, my goodness they are so cute!! The googly eyes are a nice touch!
ReplyDeleteAaahhh!! I love it!! Great idea. I laughed out loud when I saw these. They look so cute and fun.
